Hi Nick – I always found the spiderwalk unnecessary (cool to see but also pointless). Like the head spin it was more of a look what we can do rather than adding any value in the film. I felt it took away from the supernatural activity contained in Regan’s room. It also takes away arguably from Linda Blair’s best line when she comes downstairs and tells everyone that “you’re going to die up there. Terrified and then urinates on the floor” That the room was the unsafe place possessed before Regan.
For me I felt that everything out of the ordinary was confined to her room which was the only unsafe place in the house.
My first viewing was the original theatrical cut. However, I do prefer the extended addition. (Albeit the spiderwalk) I feel it gives more context to the characters with the additional scenes it’s more complete overall. For the same reason Alien’s extended version is the better film it allows us to breathe and breaks up the boom crash opera.
