Read below for the third and final part of Robert W’s authentic Interview with Ridley Scott!
INTERVIEWER:
So, I think I’m beginning to understand. On robots, you’ve mentioned Dave’s character was one of the most important to develop, what was the process there?
RIDLEY SCOTT:
Oh, Dave? Well in the first Alien we had an evil robot. So we did that again.

INTERVIEWER:
Oh… okay. Well the black goo was new, so it wasn’t all repeating yourself!
RIDLEY SCOTT:
The black goo was important. The black goo killed the alien at the start and explained how the human race was created. Then it was a substance that turned earth worms into snakes, turned humans into zombies and made squid facehuggers in sterile wombs.
INTERVIEWER:
You’re right! I hadn’t realised that the one substance did all that. It did though didn’t it?
RIDLEY SCOTT:
Yeah, we’re pretty proud of that. After all the CGI, FMBs and that one scene developing Dave’s character, we decided instead of several frightening origins of these events, we’d just have one super frightening origin!

INTERVIEWER:
Okay, I can see why you said I need to work on my willing suspension of disbelief
RIDLEY SCOTT:
Oh, it’s good to hear you’re making progress!
INTERVIEWER:
There’s been a lot of fairly negative conversation on how the Life Raft with independent power was introduced, and how Vicker’s Medical Bay did not work on her gender. I suppose the explanation was that it was really for Weyland?
RIDLEY SCOTT:
Well, we thought of the gender limitation after shooting. It was way to add tension to that cool medical scene! It frustrates me that people focus on ridiculous points, instead of talking about how cool that scene was! They keep asking me why is with Vickers and not Weyland?
INTERVIEWER:
As someone who is now overcoming my problem with willing suspension of disbelief, could you elaborate?
RIDLEY SCOTT:
Well it HAD to be with Vickers so it would eject with the Giant Face Hugger in the Life Raft.
INTERVIEWER:
Oh right.
RIDLEY SCOTT:
Obvious really.
INTERVIEWER:
I guess people who struggle with suspension of disbelief would then ask why wasn’t Weyland’s Cryo Pod in that Life Raft too?
RIDLEY SCOTT:
Why would you do that?
INTERVIEWER:
Well, to keep him near the Medical Bay and on the Life Raft…
RIDLEY SCOTT:
What? That’s got nothing to do with it. The Medical Bay was in the life raft because it needed to be there so the Giant Face Hugger could attack Shaw at the climax.
INTERVIEWER:
Ah, you’re really helping me with insight into the disbelief problem. So putting the Medical Bay on the Life Raft was so you could shoot that scene?
RIDLEY SCOTT:
Obviously!
INTERVIEWER:
Consistency in the story had nothing to do with it?
RIDLEY SCOTT:
The what in the story?
INTERVIEWER:
Pardon, falling in to old patterns. But I think I’m getting insight into “my” problem with movies. So, I’m thinking about the FMBs, the Medical Bay, Vickers’ death scene. it seems like the scenes in your movies direct the story, not the story dictating the scenes. Right?
RIDLEY SCOTT:
I don’t understand…?
INTERVIEWER:
No I don’t think you do anymore. Tell me, how much time do you spend with George Lucas* these days?
That’s it for the exclusive ‘Interview’ with Robert W. As someone who is super-excited for Ridley Scott’s new film ‘The Martian’, I’m looking forward to seeing if this film will change our Interviewer’s mind about one of Movie Mingler’s favourite directors!
